The next phase of the War of 2027 came with extreme measures from NATO. A psychoactive smoke called VL-7 was deployed in Fort Lyndon and the mountainsides of Bavaria, Germany. VL-7 was developed in the underbelly of Fort Lyndon, which is known as Defense Testing Complex 3 (a new Battle Royale location coming in Season 2's Nightfall phase).

Pax Armata embarrassed NATO on the world stage by taking Hagental Airbase in Germany. But this wouldn’t last. NATO was preparing a response, and this time it would come swiftly.

BREADCRUMBS

While Season 2 was the formal introduction of VL-7 into the Battlefield Universe, it was referenced during the California Resistance phase of Season 1. On the Fort Lyndon map, heavily armed SCIFs could be found at random places. From the official California Resistance blog, it states: "Several highly-armed SCIFs containing classified information are traced back to a militant SoCal prepper group known as 'The 323.'" This classified info must have been the description of VL-7 from an unknown messenger.

With the Season 2 update, Chen Lin's bio was updated to detail that he has a "career in law enforcement." Although it's unknown if he's in local or federal law enforcement. What we can surmise from the text above is that the unknown messenger had knowledge that VL-7 was going to be deployed in the near future, and how personnel in Fort Lyndon can treat its effects. The unknown messenger also shares which gas mask filter standard must be used against VL-7.

VL-7 DEPLOYED

The first phase of Season 2 titled "Extreme Measures" saw two limited time additions to both REDSEC modes.

SYNTHESIS

In Battle Royale: Synthesis, a set of locations on Fort Lyndon was engulfed in VL-7. Every match, one location from the set would be covered with the orangish smoke and provide weapons with a rarity of Rare or higher. Some of these POIs were:

• Ground Zero
• Golf Course
• Defense Nexus
• Chemical Storage
• The Seal
• Redline Storage

A new Strike Package was also added that allowed you to call in VL-7 on a specified area. These are most commonly found in the Tactical Armory Crates - red crates that have "Pax Armata" on the front - or obtained by completing the Synthesis mission.

The Synthesis mission becomes available when you're inside the unique location covered in VL-7. You are tasked with collecting three nearby samples from landed GBU-19 missiles. Then, you travel to a mixing station where the samples can be analyzed and synthesized.

Upon accepting mission:

• The Handler: “We’re gonna use that gas against them, but first you need to locate dispersal units.”

Upon completion:

• The Handler: “Solid execution. They started this mess, but we’re gonna finish it.”

It was later revealed in the Nightfall event guide that the Handler was creating a stockpile of VL-7.

ALTERED STATE

In Gauntlet: Altered State, your rounds may be affected by VL-7. This typically occurs in the earlier rounds when the play space is larger.

Notable Dialogue:

• The Handler: "Hostiles could be hiding in the gas. Take 'em out but remember, masks are a must. Find filters and out 'em to use."
• The Handler: "You need to push through that smoke to take out concealed hostiles. Watch those mask filters, they will expire."
• The Handler: "Enemy retreated into the gas and it's up to you to take 'em out. Keep those gas filters refreshed or you'll be toast."
